Retreating to Write
I am hosting a writer's retreat here in Costa Rica with some of my friends. You are invited to come write (your legacy) with us.
To Begin Again
It’s interesting trying something new. Making the choice to put yourself in a position of risk, facing a fear, and daring to see what happens not only on the other side of that decision, but finding out who you are through the process.
Such is the path I took when I divorced America back in July 2020 and wrote a book about it.
Such is the path I am taking now with my Legacy Trips.
I’ve been hosting retreats for the past 8 years.
When I started Legacy Trips, which were originally Satya Yoga Trips, I knew very little about retreat hosting other than I knew that I wanted to facilitate spaces where people could face the truth of our nation’s history of racial terror and violence, self reflect on the ways each of us have upheld and perpetuated anti-Blackness and white supremacy in our own lives, and embrace our ability to affect change and dismantle racism, first within ourselves, and then in our families and communities.
Our purpose was to listen to and learn from Black leadership, utilize antiracism tools, resources and yoga philosophy to strategize ways to do less harm, be better co-conspirators to people of the global majority, and develop ways to move forward with mindful action toward collective liberation.
In 2018, I went from being a 15+ year professional fitness instructor and facilitator in the health and wellness industry, into being a full-time activist and community organizer in the racial and social justice space. I knew well how to hold a variety of spaces for people. But when it came to hosting my own retreats, I was a beginner.
From that place of both knowing and not knowing, Legacy Trips was created and we’ve done some incredible things. People have had transformational experiences. I know that because that has been the consistent feedback from people after they returned home from our Alabama trips. And that is why I never had to spend money on marketing and promotion these past 8 years. The work has sustained itself as a living, breathing thing that the community has carried forward through social media visibility, personal impact testimonies, and word of mouth.
Creating and running Legacy Trips has changed me on a fundamental level, and continues to transform me as I keep my heart and eyes open and allow myself to lean more into what I desire to build, how I desire to live, and who I desire to be in community with.
I am a lover of retreats. A student of retreats. I am a teacher of retreats as for the past 7 years I have been guest faculty for the Embody Yoga’s Roots 300 hr YTT (register here for the next cohort starting in June).
So while yes I consider myself an expert when it comes to hosting retreats, I am stepping into something new…
Writing Our Legacy
Here’s the new thing I’m trying…from racial and social justice trips in Alabama, to retreats centered around finding and using our voices, doing deep inner work, prioritizing our joy, peace, and pleasure by any means necessary, and gathering in beautiful environments where we can meet and honor our most creative selves, the very thing that makes us human.
I’m hosting a writer’s retreat with some of my friends this July.
July 17-22. In Costa Rica. For women and non-binary people.
All-inclusive. Gourmet meals. Writing sessions. Free time. A beach day excursion. Movement and mindfulness. Payment plans available.

So far, we have a small group of writers joining us. Our single occupancy sold out a few weeks ago (yay!). Originally, we had an off-site/commuter option hoping that it would open up more access for people who want to attend. But we continued to hear feedback about people not wanting to find their own accommodations and would prefer the all-inclusive packages. So we made a pivot…
The off-site/commuter rate has been removed, and we have opened up more single and double occupancy (including some ‘shared’ options) and reduced the number of spots available. There are now just 8 spots left.
So I am inviting you to join us on a free call, Sunday, May 31, at 12p ET, for an hour of conversation with me and these friends, Kim, Oge, Tony, and a few others who have been supporting this Legacy Trips work for several years now. We will be discussing why each of us are doing this new thing…why writing, why a retreat in Costa Rica, and why now.
Want to learn more? We would love to see you virtually on Sunday so we can talk about it all together. It’s free but you must register to get the zoom link.
Spoiler alert
I deeply feel the need to do something with my life that is not so desperately attached to my despair about the crumbling world around us. But rather is centered in my ancestral desire to write and dream ourselves on the other side of the old world that is dying (white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and the violent empire state, just to name a few ), and use my heart, mind, and soul to dream/imagine/step into the many new worlds that are being born. Our words, our actions, will birth the world that we all want to live in.
All that to say, I’m looking for my people who also feel the need to sit with our journals and pens, with our laptops and google docs, with both our grief and our joy, and write what it means to be, and feel, and live through these very particular moments in our history.
My commitment is to building a legacy of healing, liberation and love for myself, for my loved ones, and for my community.
I’ve made a promise to myself to live with joyful purpose and to not keep this liberation that I have found here living, loving and writing in Costa Rica, to myself.
This is why I am retreating to write, and why I am inviting you to join me…because I’ve been asking myself: am I the only one who feels this way?
My internal knowing, says that no, I am not the only one who feels this way.
If any of this resonates or calls to you, take this as your sign to come be with us here in Costa Rica and see what words are waiting to pour out of you. They may very well be the exact words that you yourself need to hear.
