Return to Legacy
Turns out, GATHERING is the medicine.
The short story is that LEGACY TRIPS IS BACK!
The bit longer story is that in late 2024, I announced that I would no longer be offering Legacy Trips. The year had just taken too much from me, likely that year took too much from all of us. My nephew was lynched. Our family dysfunction prevented any opportunity to fight for justice and we were left with our broken hearts in our hands, nowhere else to turn and nothing else to do but be sad and Black. I never imagined that after leading scores of people through the lynching memorial in Alabama over the course of 7 years, that I would one day walk in the literal shoes that thousands upon thousands of Black families walked who have mourned the loss of their loved ones to lynching...a story told at the lynching memorial, now my own personal family trauma in addition to our collective trauma and what the ancestor Ida B Wells calls the ‘national crime.’
Trump had just been overwhelmingly elected as President again and we had just endured a shitshow of a presidential campaign season with Genocide Joe and then his VP, the first Black and Indian Democrat woman running...while both parties promised to never cease sending billions of dollars and weapons to Israel to continue the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. There was so much division between families and friends. I had lost a number of close friends and contacts as a result of my political views. I was heartbroken over Gaza, the state of the country, and the friendships that I lost during that time. All that to say, my decision at that time to end Legacy Trips came from a place of despair, hopelessness, and grief.
Fast forward a few months later, I was planning to fulfill my obligation to host a Legacy Trip for Transracial adoptees. Then, I met and fell in love with Tony. And then as I continued deeper on my own healing journey, there was a break and a shift in my grieving, and I began to come alive again and ask what was being asked of me, what could I do now to contribute to the revolution that is coming and is here. And the next thing I knew, I had a fresh perspective about everything, including this work that I’ve been doing with Legacy Trips since 2018. It became clear to me that Legacy Trips was not in fact over. I decided that as long as the people continued to want and show up for these trips and these experiences, I would continue offering them.
The result would be our October 2025 Legacy Trip that Tony and I facilitated together for both transracial adoptees and others as we opened that trip up to the public.
Turns out, gathering was the medicine.
I’m grateful to both Jen Kinney and Colleen Shearer for the ways they continually show up for me and Legacy Trips and their never ending support of and belief in the power of this Legacy Trips work.
So here we are, in the beginning of 2026, and I have been having beautiful conversations with people that are still here with me wanting to do collective liberation work as well as pour into the community in new ways. And so I set out to schedule different kinds of Legacy Trips that are not racial justice focused, but focused on the healing tools that I believe lead us to that collective liberation, help us be in our bodies, and use our voices to speak truth to power as we tell our stories and refuse to be erased.
Today, Legacy Trips will cultivate spaces for play and rest, reconnecting to our joy, and showing up in the world in radical and revolutionary ways through care, community, and connection. That looks like continuing our trips to Alabama, in addition to offering a variety of retreats in Costa Rica, and more.
This is the NEW LEGACY.
